Preacher: Dr. Michael Wittmer
Dr. Michael E. Wittmer is Professor of Systematic Theology at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, MI, where he has impacted students through his unique and fresh approach to church history and Christian theology. He earned his B.A. at Cedarville University, an M.A. from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from Calvin Theological Seminary. He has also done graduate studies at Dallas Theological Seminary.
At Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, Dr. Wittmer challenges the hearts and minds of students as he introduces historically rooted, orthodox teachings through current modern-day terminology. Since beginning as a Professor with GRTS in 1996, Dr. Wittmer’s perspicuous ability to expose the Scriptures has earned the respect of colleagues and students alike through his courses on the thought of Augustine, John Calvin, and Karl Barth, among others. Moreover, his reputation as a Christian scholar has continued to grow in greater academia as he has published works and taken over as the Director of the Center for Christian Worldview through GRTS (2003–present). In addition to teaching at GRTS, Dr. Wittmer is also a visiting professor of Systematic Theology at Asia Baptist Theological Seminary in Singapore (2000–present) where he uses his training in missions to contextualize the gospel and impact Asian leaders for work in kingdom-oriented ministry. He has also been involved with Cornerstone University, Calvin College, and Dallas Baptist University in various capacities.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Wittmer has been an interim pastor in Michigan and Ohio since 1995. He continually serves as a pulpit supply preacher and has held pastorates at more than a handful of churches in West Michigan. A strong advocate for all believers to grasp and appreciate theology, Dr. Wittmer has led dozens of sessions on topics such as Biblical Worldview and the Trinity and has presented a seminar on the meaning of a Christian Worldview called “What It’s All About,” at hundreds of churches, schools, and missions organizations across the Midwest since 2004. An active member of the Evangelical Theological Society, Dr. Wittmer has presented papers at several conferences in addition to being the keynote speaker at various colleges and for several parachurch groups. Internationally, Dr. Wittmer’s career began just out of college. From 1990–1992, he was an English instructor at the People’s University in Beijing, China, where he taught English during the day and ministered to students at night.
Dr. Wittmer has penned several books, articles, and book reviews and is a frequent reviewer for The Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society and The Calvin Theological Journal. He contributed a chapter to The Image of God in the Human Body: Essays on Christianity and Sports called “A Christian Perspective on Sport” in addition to publishing his first book Heaven Is a Place on Earth: Why Everything You Do Matters to God (Zondervan, 2004). His most recent work, Don’t Stop Believing: Why Living Like Jesus Is Not Enough, melds together theology and praxis while stressing the importance of practical theology.
He and his wife, Julie, have three children: Avery, Landon, and Alayna.
